Molly Ross | Spectacle in the Street: Art of the Parade
About the presentation: Parades draw people together and transform collective spaces. In this lecture, you will be inspired by traditions and histories of parading from around the world considering how the bold graphic qualities and simple choreography of bodies in costumes can strengthen a sense of community identity through shared cultural experience. About the speaker: Molly Ross is an artist and academic working in the field of cultural performance including puppetry and parades. The work ranges in scale from quiet intimate puppet shows to grand processions that engage communities as visual alchemists transforming their neighborhoods into places of spectacle. In 1996, she founded and served for two decades as director of Nana Projects. This multidisciplinary company created innovative artwork to draw people together in public spaces, strengthening their sense of community identity through shared cultural experience. She taught at Maryland Institute College of Art in the Interdisciplinary Sculpture Department teaching puppetry, performance and community art. She received the prestigious UNIMA-USA Citation of Excellence in 2010 for the Shadow Puppet Performance, "Alonzo's Lullaby."
